1
Step 1 of 19Hi, I'm Ian Cathles. I'm from Ardrossan Nurseries in Batlow and welcome to my orchard. I am now the second generation.
2
Step 2 of 19My father started it and ever since then I've been sort of down this way and involved in growing apples.
3
Step 3 of 19My son Jack works in the marketing division and it looks like the next generation will be carrying on to the future.
4
Step 4 of 19Probably over 60 years we've been sending apples to Woolworths and I think I might be doing things right because they keep on buying my apples.
5
Step 5 of 19These days all production of apples on our orchard is under netting.
6
Step 6 of 19It's a very labour intensive work and it takes a lot of technical help as well.
7
Step 7 of 19The process of the nursery to full production is at least six years. And then you roll up your sleeves and you're back into it next year as well.
8
Step 8 of 19The fires came about by a lightning strike in a pine plantation.
9
Step 9 of 19It started on about the 28th of December 2019.
10
Step 10 of 19We were warned Batlow was undefendable. We had planned to stay and that was a tough time.
11
Step 11 of 19The family were involved, some friends, neighbours and even people just turned up just to stay and help which was just unbelievable.
12
Step 12 of 19A lot of houses were saved, orchard was saved and you just, you can never thank those people enough for what happened on that day.
13
Step 13 of 19We saved the orchard.
14
Step 14 of 19I thought I was over that. And then to come out of the fires, we've gone from just totally one extreme to the other.
15
Step 15 of 19The apples are growing beautifully, the colouring wonderfully.
16
Step 16 of 19That's the importance behind this crop SSC. What you can achieve, it's just beautiful.
17
Step 17 of 19We're always, it's a two-way relationship. We grow good apples for them and they give us good feedback that we know what varieties they want and what time of the year and everything.
18
Step 18 of 19We're very optimistic for the future here. This crop certainly brings a spring in our step and hopefully this is the way the next few seasons will carry on.
19
Step 19 of 19You know, it's what the farmer wants to achieve.
