Operating a Cat 320 Excavator The basics
Alright, I'm going to give you a quick run down of the startup procedures and how to operate a CAT excavator.
Alright, I'm going to give you a quick run down of the startup procedures and how to operate a CAT excavator.

Step 1 of 44
Alright, I'm going to give you a quick run down of the startup procedures and how to operate a CAT excavator.
2
Step 2 of 44
This one is a 320. It's the same for a 336 or most sizes are going to be the same controls.
3
Step 3 of 44
But in here, there's no key for this one.
4
Step 4 of 44
It's coded. This one doesn't have a code. Turn on the switch, wait for your screen to fire up.
5
Step 5 of 44
And now, hit the start button. It tells you what setting it's on, which person.
6
Step 6 of 44
It's just a guess. There's a bucket attached. It's on fast speed.
7
Step 7 of 44
It's on standard controls. Just touch screen it okay and you can't move anything until you lock it out.
8
Step 8 of 44
Once that bar comes up, it's fully operational. And now, they do that for safety reasons so you don't hop in or out with it operational.
9
Step 9 of 44
So now, it does operate. So now everything works.
10
Step 10 of 44
Alright, next on the list is your speed control, which is right here.
11
Step 11 of 44
I turn mine all the way up. And now, we can operate the joysticks.
12
Step 12 of 44
Right joystick will bring the bucket up. Pushing it forward will bring it down.
13
Step 13 of 44
To the right opens your bucket. To the left closes your bucket.
14
Step 14 of 44
The left joystick, going left, turns the entire turret of the machine left.
15
Step 15 of 44
To the right, right, forward, brings out the arm.
16
Step 16 of 44
Pulling it back towards you brings in the arm.
17
Step 17 of 44
And you have to work them in motion together to get the right, get things the way you want it.
18
Step 18 of 44
You can't just do one and then the other. You have to learn the motion of both together.
19
Step 19 of 44
Okay, now I'm going to show you how we move the tracks.
20
Step 20 of 44
You saw how we move the bucket and the arm, but now how we move the tracks.
21
Step 21 of 44
You can use the handles. I've never used them because usually you're doing both at the same time.
22
Step 22 of 44
But it's just foot pedals, forward and reverse. Your left track forward, right track forward.
23
Step 23 of 44
When you do both at the same time, they both move forward.
24
Step 24 of 44
So we're going to back up, which has a backup camera on this. It stays on all the time.
25
Step 25 of 44
Now we can swing around while we're doing that.
26
Step 26 of 44
So now I'm still backing up as far as foot controls, but I am going forward in motion.
27
Step 27 of 44
So the controls follow whichever direction the motor drive is.
28
Step 28 of 44
So just because I'm moving forward, I'm actually going in reverse.
29
Step 29 of 44
I just turn the machine around. It's the same speed either way, forward or reverse.
30
Step 30 of 44
Then going slower or faster, no less or no more power.
31
Step 31 of 44
And then we're going to go over here and knock down some trees.
32
Step 32 of 44
All right, we have a pretty large tree to knock down here.
33
Step 33 of 44
So I'm going to show you all.
34
Step 34 of 44
Since this excavator does not have a thumb attachment, which would grab and pull, I have to knock it over and then dig up the root.
35
Step 35 of 44
So I use both my controls at the same time.
36
Step 36 of 44
Knock down the tree.
37
Step 37 of 44
I need to have it away, so I'm going to kind of scoop it up a little bit.
38
Step 38 of 44
Grab it.
39
Step 39 of 44
Toss it. Now we need to dig up the root.
40
Step 40 of 44
Get these little suckers here.
41
Step 41 of 44
Somebody left a deer stand out here.
42
Step 42 of 44
With these little trees, it's easier just to kind of scoop up underneath so the tree to fall back towards you.
43
Step 43 of 44
Scoop it up. Move it out of the way.
44
Step 44 of 44
And that is the very basics on how to operate an excavator.
